More about...

More about the Brazilian money real.

In the 16th century, the Portuguese colonisers brought gold, silver and copper coins with them for trading purposes. During the same period, pirates often traded on the Brazilian coast which also encouraged the circulation of various coins. In the course of the next two centuries, Spanish Reales, brought to Brazil from Peru, were the most abundantly circulated coins.

In 1772, the first paper bill was introduced when the Portugese Crown began extracting diamonds from Tejuco do Serro Frio as a means of raising funds. Slowly, banknotes began to gain peoples' confidence and grew steadily more popular.

The Brazilian real was first adopted as the official money in 1994, replacing the cruzeiro real at a rate of 1 real to 2750 cruzeiro real. The modern real was introduced in 1994 as part of the Plano Real, a substantial monetary reform package that aimed to put an end to three decades of rampant inflation. The real was pegged to the US dollar. This lasted until 1999, when even stronger inflationary pressures forced the real to partially float against the dollar.
