More about...

More about the money in Croatia.

During Roman times, in the provinces of Pannonia (today Hungary and Slavonia), taxes were collected in the then highly valued marten pelts. In medieval trading marten skins were also used as units of value. The word kuna means marten in Croatian. Croatian coins are called lipa that means linden or lime or tilia tree. The coins are introduced in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 lipa, and 1, 2, 5 and 25 kuna. Due to their low value, 1 and 2 lipa coins are rarely used. Another rarely used coin is 25 kuna.
