The first European coin which reached the Philippine Islands with Ferdinand Magellan's arrival in 1521 was the teston or four-reales silver coin. Philippines started to use peso, the Philippine peso fuerte around 1852. The peso fuerte was decimalized in 1864. The fuerte was replaced by the revolutionary peso in 1898, and finally replaced by the modern peso in 1901. At the time of World War II Japanese took the Philippines over and issued their own official pesos that had to compete with various US Military, emergency, and guerrilla pesos. Based on the current price of gold, the Philippine peso has now lost 99.9% of its original 1903–1949 value.
