More about the Romanian money.

The Romanian leu notes issued on 1 July 2005 are of equal size to euro banknotes, so that machines will need less refitting once Romania joins the euro zone. All banknotes are printed on plastic polymer, each banknote also features a small transparent window, in the shape of a distinctive item characterising the activity of the pictured personality.

The Romanian coins that are currently in circulation are one ban, five bani, ten bani and fifty bani. The one-ban coin is rare and not in demand by either banks or retailers. Supermarkets however continue to advertise prices such as 9.99. In practice, retailers almost always round to the nearest 5 bani and recently to 10 bani.

In the 1990s, after the downfall of communism, inflation ran high due to reform failures and the legalization of owning foreign currency, reaching rates as high as 300% per year in 1993. On 1 July 2005, the leu was revalued at the rate of 10,000 "old" lei (ROL) for one "new" leu (RON), thus psychologically bringing the purchasing power of the Romanian leu back in line with those of other major Western currencies. 1,000,000 lei became 100 lei.

Central bank of Romania

The National Bank of Romania was commissioned in 1880 as a result of the Romanian liberal way of thinking centred on the idea of putting in place a solid credit system. The start-up capital amounted to lei 30 million, of which lei 10 million was state owned.

After the communist regime in 1990, the National Bank of Romania has embarked upon the bumpy path of resuming the operations it had performed before 1946. Overall, the Romanian financial system has become much more dynamic and complex in the past few years, leading to intertwining at institutional level. These developments called for the co-operation among the authorities in charge of licensing, regulating, supervising and controlling the component markets of the financial system in order to ensure the transparency, stability and integrity of the financial system and its component markets, the compliance with the applicable legal framework, as well as the expansion of the national financial stability framework.
